The Body Remembers What the Mind Tries to Forget

How Unresolved Emotions Can Show Up as Physical Health Problems

For years, we've been taught to separate the mind from the body, as if our emotions exist in one place and our physical health exists in another. But modern science is revealing something many ancient healing traditions have understood for centuries: our thoughts, emotions, stress, and experiences can have a profound impact on our physical health.

Have you ever noticed that during a stressful season of life you experience headaches, digestive issues, fatigue, skin problems, or chronic pain? That's not a coincidence.

Our bodies are constantly responding to our emotional state.

One of the most influential books on this topic is The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk. In this groundbreaking work, Dr. van der Kolk explains how trauma, chronic stress, and unresolved emotional experiences can become stored within the body.

When we experience emotional pain that is never fully processed, the nervous system can remain stuck in a state of fight, flight, or freeze. Over time, this can contribute to physical symptoms such as:

• Chronic inflammation

• Digestive disorders

• Autoimmune conditions

• Hormonal imbalances

• Sleep disturbances

• Anxiety and depression

• Fatigue and low energy

• Chronic muscle tension and pain

The body is not working against us. Often, it is trying to communicate with us.

Another fascinating area of research is epigenetics.

Epigenetics studies how our environment, lifestyle, stress levels, emotions, and experiences can influence the way our genes are expressed.

While we inherit genes from our parents, our genes are not necessarily our destiny. Certain emotional and environmental factors can turn genetic expressions on or off.

This means that unresolved stress, trauma, and emotional burdens may impact the body on a cellular level. Conversely, healing practices, healthy relationships, proper nutrition, movement, prayer, and emotional release can support healthier gene expression.

The good news is that our bodies have an incredible capacity to heal when given the proper support.

Many people spend years addressing physical symptoms without exploring the emotional roots that may be contributing to them.

While nutrition, movement, sleep, and supplementation are incredibly important, emotional wellness is another piece of the puzzle.

Sometimes the body is asking us to acknowledge grief we never processed.

Sometimes it's chronic stress.

Sometimes it's fear, resentment, guilt, or past trauma that continues to keep the nervous system in a state of survival.

When these emotions are identified and released, many people report feeling lighter, calmer, more energized, and more connected to their overall well-being.

One tool that I have found fascinating is frequency scanning technology.

A frequency scan is designed to identify energetic stressors and imbalances within the body that may be connected to emotional, physical, or environmental factors. While it is not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure disease, many people use frequency scanning as part of a holistic wellness approach.

The scan can help uncover potential emotional patterns, stress responses, and energetic imbalances that may have been stored beneath the surface for years.

By bringing awareness to these hidden stressors, individuals can begin the process of releasing emotions, supporting nervous system regulation, and creating space for deeper healing.

Many people find that once they address both the physical and emotional aspects of wellness, they experience greater overall vitality and balance.

Your body is always communicating with you.

Symptoms are not always the enemy. Sometimes they are messages.

When we begin to nourish our bodies, regulate our nervous systems, process our emotions, strengthen our faith, and create healthy daily habits, we can support healing on multiple levels.

True wellness is about more than what we eat. It is about caring for the whole person: body, mind, and spirit.

I'd love to hear your thoughts. Have you ever noticed a connection between your emotional health and your physical symptoms?
